Chikondi Children's Home, Lusaka

Chikondi Children's Home, Lusaka

Based near some of the worst slums in Lusaka, we provide residential care for up to 24 of the most vulnerable children, all of them rescued in a terrible state of neglect and starvation. As we care for them holistically, we aim to reintegrate them back with their family or into foster care.

Here we care for up to 24 children on our two homes in Lusaka, all of whom have either been abandoned or orphaned (or both). We rescued just about all of them in a terrible state of neglect and starvation.

We care for them by providing food, residential care, clothing, an education and lots of love, with our staff working to make sure every child knows they are an important part of the home. In addition to their schoolwork, the kids learn skills such as sewing, gardening, and cooking, which will benefit them when they leave our program. Organised play time helps them to develop well socially, and Bible studies teach them about God’s great love for them.

We actually raise chickens on the site which we use to help fund the Centre, as well as two wells for water. We also have a shop where we sell the chickens, home-grown vegetables and even excess electricity. All of these allow us to provide for the kids’ current needs while giving them hope for a brighter future.

Looking ahead, our most important goal is to locate family members of our kids, with the hope of reunification after careful evaluation and training.

Chikondi Children's Homes: A story of hope

Meet Mark (name changed to protect privacy)

Mark has been in our programme since he was five years old. There is a lot we don’t know about his early life. We do know that one night, Mark and his sister were wandering the streets when they were spotted by police. Social workers got involved and the children were originally placed in another home, but Mark’s sister quickly ran away and has still not been located.

Mark was brought to Chikondi Village. During his years with us, his life has dramatically improved. He is now 12 years old and doing well at the local school, and is helpful with chores in the home. Like many of his friends, he enjoys playing football and other sports.

What a blessing to see his life transformed! God is in the business of rescuing, redeeming, and restoring the precious kids of Zambia, and Kids Alive is thankful to be part of that work.
