Construction Begins in South Sudan!

The construction of a new Children's Home for former street children is underway in South Sudan!

Located in the town of Wau, where poverty and homelessness is a major problem and where there are hundreds of street children with nowhere to go, the Home will eventually provide a safe environment for more than 30 children to grow up in.

Thanks to generous support from some of our partners in the UK, USA and Australia, land has been purchased, a boundary wall has been constructed (see the picture right) and a well has been dug. The next step will be to begin the construction of the main building early in the new year.

Francis Tombe, our Director in South Sudan, said: "This is an exciting moment. We already care for 14 former street children in Wau and we are so encouraged by the changes that we have seen in their lives. Our dream is that many children will have new hope for the future as a result of this new home".

The planned growth means that facilities at the Home need to be improved – and a new kitchen and dining room is under construction (see picture right). Another adjacent piece of land has been purchased, allowing for additional farming land, including the construction of a large greenhouse, which will be used to grow food for the children and help the Home become more self-sustaining.

And the children themselves? They are delightful. The smiles on their faces and their obvious joy as they sang songs were a powerful demonstration of the love that they receive daily from their committed caregivers. “Thank you for coming. And please thank everyone who loves us and helps us” said one young beaming girl, before adding: “I have my school exams tomorrow. And I can take these with hope!”
