Miguel from the Dominican Republic

Miguel’s Story: From Despair to Hope

*Miguel and his siblings arrived at the Ark Jarabacoa, in the Dominican Republic, rescued from a home marked by drug abuse, neglect, and violence. Their parents struggled with addiction and mental health issues, and the children were often caught in the middle, frequently abused and even used to run drugs for their father, a known dealer in the community.

When Miguel first joined the Ark, he was emotionally shut down - quiet, distant, and withdrawn. Caregivers described him as expressionless, as though life had lost all meaning. He resisted connection, lashed out in anger, and frequently fought with his siblings. But in time, things began to change.

Within just a few months, Miguel formed a strong, respectful bond with his house father, an early turning point in his healing journey.

Academic progress
Before coming to the Ark, Miguel had missed out on much of his education. But now, enrolled at ANIJA School and supported by tutors and dedicated teachers, he’s thriving, achieving excellent grades and attending school consistently.

Spiritual transformation
In 2024, Miguel made a life-changing decision to follow Christ and was baptised. He’s now actively involved in his local church’s youth ministry and continues to grow in his faith and understanding of God’s love.

Physical and emotional growth
Miguel is now healthier and enjoys sports at school and in the community. Emotionally, he has come a long way; no longer ruled by anger, he’s learning to resolve conflicts peacefully and has become a caring, protective brother. He’s helping build a safe, loving home environment not just for himself, but for those around him.

One Ark director reflected:

“Everything had hit rock bottom just before Miguel arrived. And now it’s all different. He’s grown physically, emotionally, spiritually, and academically. He has hope for the future.”

Miguel’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a child is given more than just safety.  They're given love, structure, and the chance to heal.

By God’s grace and through the faithful care of house parents, the Ark’s team, and a Christ-centred community, Miguel is now living a life filled with promise.
